Oh The Places You’ll Go…

The title of the exhibition is inspired by two books which have propelled Soul into her career with a level of passion undeterred. The first- The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, and the second classic “Oh The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.  It is courage and a general trust in your “Personal Legend”  that propels people to excel past  the fates that society assigns them due to their circumstances or surroundings. Oh The Places You’ll Go is a highlighted exhibition that showcases the work of Old Art Soul and her artistic journey.

This exhibition pulls works from Soul’s collection in the USA. It is serving as a fundraiser to provide for the youth of West Africa. During a recent trip to Ghana and Nigeria, Old Art Soul had the ability to see firsthand children who need proper access to resources as well as an education. One of her goals is to help foster the creativity of these children to inspire them to reach for the stars. Photography that Soul captured whilst in Ghana and Nigeria are also incorporated in this show.

Soul has decided to donate 30% of all sold works to Africa Everything, where they provide resources for these children to have an education. Knowledge is an empowering tool, and it’s time we come together to ensure that it’s possible for the children of the diaspora to be able to access it.

Jomani Danielle will be curating these large scale works that play in multiple mediums. They will be shown from 3/1/23- 3/30/23 at Basquiat’s Bottle.

Old Art Soul: The Artist.

Soul Nieves is a Brooklyn Born, Harlem Based  painter and creative force that began painting in the midst of the pandemic. When locked alone with her hands, thoughts and canvas, her expression propelled her to create incessantly. Not afraid to delve into different mediums, Nieves found comfort in acrylic, oil painting and wire wrapping.

Nieves sold her first work in July of 2020 during the pandemic. A friend asked her to “paint a woman, any woman, any size as long as she’s beautiful”. Soul decided to paint Yara Shahidi, a young activist and actress. Following her “personal legend” Soul recycled a cork board that she found outside during a run. She then spray painted the background and filled the holes with studs . Surrounding the image Soul wrote the names of legendary black women that have paved the way for success on a global level over the course of history. Inspired by this moment 2020 Nieves continued. Ultimately she painted over 70 works that year . All of which are inspired by her movement, feelings, surroundings throughout the course of her life.

Soul credits a portion of her transition from hobby painter to full time artist to Joan Greenberg, a woman that she met while lifeguarding.  Greenberg convinced Soul to apply to The Fashion Institute Of Technology . Doubtful yet willing to take a leap of faith, Nieves applied and was accepted. From there, Nieves took her artistic journey into her own hands and curated two solo art shows and house parties  in her  Harlem apartment as a fundraiser for her tuition . During this time she sold enough art to cover her tuition and supplies for the year.

Since then Oldartsoul has been included in a number of exhibitions  outside of her own curation. Taking the art world by storm, propelled by her undying love of art and the support of her strong community, Soul Nieves is someone to watch out for.
